Benefits of Membership

Membership in the IFPN provides an opportunity for CNR members to network and interact with their colleagues globally, to gain knowledge and participate directly with the International Council of Nurses [ICN], and to enhance and share their knowledge with perioperative nurses throughout the world to assist in providing the safest, most efficient to perioperative patients.

As the only perioperative nursing affiliate of ICN, members have a valuable link to this prestigious organization and share in the information from ICN on a monthly basis that is distributed in the form of email communication or available through this website. AORN and ICN are collaborating with IFPN on joint work of cross-mapping the PNDS [Perioperative Nursing Data Set] with the ICNP – to provide perioperative nursing with a universal language to enhance dialogue, education, and assist with research.

IFPN publishes an international online journal of perioperative care. The articles in this online publication enhance the educational experience of IFPN members by the sharing of practices and standards, as well as clinical articles that share new procedures and technologies.

Guidelines for perioperative practice such as surgical counts, general hand washing, surgical hand washing, surgical skin site preparation, re-use of single-use devices, and electrosurgical units are currently written. Developing guidelines include surgical masks, ethical recruitment, and safety in the perioperative environment, are among the upcoming issues to be discussed and developed.

Because education is the key to enhancing perioperative care, the IFPN has collaborated with CNR members to provide educational programs in conjunction with their annual congresses. These study days provide a global perspective to the members in attendance to broaden their knowledge base of international perioperative nursing. At AORN’s World Congresses for the past few years, IFPN has conducted networking sessions that have served to demonstrate that we all have similar problems with unique solutions to improve practice and serve as a catalyst for developing guidelines.

Collaboration with our industry partners has resulted in the production of four educational modules. The modules include basic microbiology, antimicrobial agents, hand hygiene, and understanding glove allergy. Our industry colleagues have assisted in the publication of the IFPN guidelines for easy distribution to health care facilities around the world.

Development of a toolkit for perioperative nursing groups that wish to establish an organisation for perioperative nurses has begun. Work in the developing areas of Africa and Papua, New Guinea have demonstrated the need for such a toolkit. The experiences in these countries have generated documents to assist interested groups in the formation of such organisations.

This is but a snapshot of the value of becoming a member of the International Federation of Perioperative Nursing. We hope you will take the opportunity to explore the website, evaluate the value, and fill out the membership application form. We would welcome your input.

The website is planned to be a learning resource about the organisation, about our shared goals and aspirations and to further the aims of IFPN. We have achieved a significant amount in the six years since the launch, and there are many plans currently being developed.
